When you try your best…! Chris Martin wanted his Super Bowl 50 Halftime Show performance to be a celebration of stars past and future, as well as a showcase of his own work — but judging by a slew of hilarious memes, the Coldplay star might have pushed himself a little too far out of the limelight!

The modest Brit invited previous Super Bowl heroes Beyoncé and Bruno Mars to step into his spotlight during the high-octane halftime performance. But as the two leather-clad, chain-wearing musicians strutted their stuff in front of the camera, a more modestly dressed Martin, 38, was left looking a little like a background musician.

The “Viva la Vida” singer is seen looking like he’s trying to peek through a gap in one funny meme, while in another he’s been erased completely, and turned into Katy Perry‘s left shark from last year’s performance.

And it wasn’t just the more anonymous members of the social media community who were having their say. Actress Anna Kendrick tweeted, “Even Chris Martin is like, what am I doing here?” she wrote. 

And Modern Family‘s exec producer Danny Zuker added, “Chris Martin kind of looks like the guy who sings with the band at his own wedding.”
