Mariah Carey Drops Breakup Anthem "Infinity": Is It About Nick Cannon?

May 2024 · 2 minute read

Ouch! Mariah Carey debuted a new song “Infinity” on Sunday, April 26, and the scathing lyrics about a breakup may just be in reference to her ex-husband Nick Cannon.

While the elusive chanteuse didn’t name anyone specifically in the song, she had a famously messy split from Cannon. The two tied the knot in April 2008, but called it quits in the first half of 2014, as Us Weekly revealed, filing for divorce earlier this year.

Carey touches on a bitter breakup in “Infinity,” crooning about a conniving ex and a better life after the split. With a sound that harkens back to her ’90s heyday, the track opens with an orchestral R&B melody before the celebrated singer shows off her impressive pipes.

“Why you mad? Talkin’ ’bout you’re mad,” she sings, “Could it be that you just lost the best you’ve ever had? / That’s your bag, yup, that’s too bad / Show is over, you ain’t gotta act.”

“Name hold weight like kilos / Boy, you actin’ so corny like Fritos,” the Grammy winner continues. “Wouldn’t have none of that without me though… Close the door, lose the key / Leave my heart on the mat for me / I was yours eternally / There’s an end to infinity / To infinity.”

In one particularly talked-about moment, the multimillionaire belts, “Is it lack of ice got you so cold? / Have you ever felt this on your own? / Why you tryin’ to play like you’re so grown? / Everything you own, boy, you still owe.” As Cannon’s wealth is presumably less than Carey’s fortune, the lyrics are assumed by many to be in reference to the singer’s financial support of the actor.

Cannon has yet to comment on the track, which is included on Carey’s latest compilation album, #1 to Infinity. Take a listen to “Infinity” in the video above!
