UPDATE: Unfortunate news. Netflix claims the teaser is “not official” and not from the streaming service. The network did not, however, say the the trailer was fake. 

Original Story: Things are about to get, well, unfortunate! Netflix’s original series adaptation of Lemony Snicket’s Series of Unfortunate Events books has remained relatively under wraps, until now. 

News broke in November 2014 that the streaming service had acquired the rights to the popular children’s book series, but since then little has come out about the cast or release of the highly anticipated show. 

On Sunday, July 5, YouTube user Eleanora Poe released the teaser trailer for the upcoming series. In the book series, orphans Klaus, Violet, and Sunny are put in the care of a Mr. Poe, the executor of their late parents’ estate. Eleanora is his sister and the editor-in-chief of The Daily Punctilio.

The 30-second clip is filled with clues and references to the series and set to a spooky soundtrack. The gramophone is playing a record by The Gothic Archies, who wrote the song “Scream and Run Away,” which is based off of the series’ first book, The Bad Beginning. 

After showing the silhouette of the evil Count Olaf, the clip reads, “Something unfortunate is coming.” 

No release date or casting announcements have been made regarding the project. In 2004, Jim Carrey starred as Count Olaf in the film adaptation. The film received mostly positive reviews and won the Oscar for Best Makeup.
